When it comes to investigative services, few are as powerful and as frequently called upon than our Electronic Forensic Investigations.
In the modern world, where everyone and everything is now online; cybercrime, internet scams, phishing emails, number spoofing, and now the Introduction of AI, all pose as serious threats to your personal data and safety on a daily basis. These new-age crimes require an entirely new set of skills, science and expertise to investigate.

In this article, we will be diving into the world of Electronic Forensics and answering questions about the various types of investigative benefits and service applications we offer here at Maverick Investigative Services.
WHAT IS ELECTRONIC FORENSICS?
Electronic Forensics or “Digital Forensics” is the scientific process of attaining, locating, preserving, analyzing and presenting digital evidence for a legal or civil investigation.
Oftentimes, when people think of the word “forensics” they think of the stereotype portrayed in television and cinema; a person wearing an all-white hazmat suit, scrubbing a crime scene for bodily fluids and analyzing victims for traces of DNA. For cases requiring an Electronic Forensic investigation, however, an electronic device becomes the yellow-taped crime scene and the investigator, instead, is scrubbing hard drives, network traffic, internet history, metadata and other variables for evidence and digital fingerprints pertinent to the case.
HOW DOES AN ELECTRONIC FORENSIC INVESTIGATION WORK?
The process of an Electronic Forensic Investigation (or Digital Forensics) can be broken down into five essential steps.
Client Intake/Search Legality: Step-one is an important part of our onboarding process, in which, our investigators must make sure we can legally or consensually investigate any devices. A warrant must be present for search in criminal cases, and consent must be given by the appropriate individual for any civil cases (domestic, divorce, infidelity etc.)
Evidence ID and Device Gathering: Next, our team will make sure we have all of the legally acquired devices/hard drives, Audio or video clips needed to begin the investigation.
Evidence Collection/Preservation: Once all potential evidence has been gathered, our investigators will make necessary copies of any digital evidence, and add them to pertinent case files keeping them within our chain of custody and protected from tampering or manipulation.
Information/Evidence Analysis: This is the stage in which our team will take all of the available data and information to make our informed conclusions to the questions the client has asked in our official report. For example: “Is my husband using dating apps on his burner phone?”
Final Findings: All of our case information will be added into a “final report” or “Findings” document and presented to the appropriate party.
HOW LONG DOES AN ELECTRONIC FORENSIC INVESTIGATION TAKE?
We typically quote our clients 3-5 business days, from start to finish for any Electronic Forensic Investigation. However, every case is different and completion times may vary depending on the scope and size of the particular investigation.
WHAT TYPES OF DEVICES CAN AN ELECTRONIC FORENSIC INVESTIGATION BE CONDUCTED ON?
Electronic Forensic investigations can be done on a wide variety of electronic devices. Mobile Devices (Smart phones, tablets) and Personal Computers (laptops and desktops) being the most commonly investigated at our firm. Electronic Forensics investigations can also be performed on devices such as; external hard drives, USB drives, SD cards, Cloud based storage solutions, network servers, and other smart devices.
WHAT ARE SOME TYPICAL USE CASES FOR AN ELECTRONIC FORENSIC INVESTIGATION?
Criminal Investigations, Civil Litigation, and Corporate Investigations typically dominate the bulk of our Electronic Forensic investigations. However, other use cases include: Recovery of lost or stolen data, Online Bullying/Harassment, and Fraud investigations, to name a few.
CAN YOU CONDUCT AN ELECTRONIC FORENSIC INVESTIGATION REMOTELY?
The short answer is, No. In order to accurately and legally obtain information from an Electronic Forensic Investigation device search, we need to physically have the device in our possession.
That said, you are welcome to send an electronic device in the mail to our business address for forensics analysis, but only after proper client intake and initial consultation has established this as a necessary part of the investigative process. We typically have our clients overnight the device (requiring a signature for chain of custody) and immediately image the device same day. If the device is needed quickly, we promptly overnight it for return.
HOW MUCH DO ELECTRONIC FORENSIC SERVICES COST?
While each cases individual needs vary, our Electronic Forensics services have a price range between $249—$3000.00 (depending on the device(s) and investigation size)
